Co-op & Multiplayer
Up to 4 playersHow co-op works in Hela: of Mice & Magic, solo, split-screen or four-player online; every puzzle works in every mode.
The three ways to play
| Mode | Players | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | 1 | Full adventure, + up to 3 Shades |
| Local split-screen | 2 | One screen, two views, confirmed in the Next Fest demo |
| Online co-op | Up to 4 | Every player is a mouse familiar with a Froggy backpack |
The Shade System, solo players never get locked out
Hela's puzzles are designed for teamwork, but you never need a second human. Solo, you can summon up to three Shades, spectral copies of your mouse. Each Shade repeats the exact action you performed when you created it, and you can switch control between all of them at will. Playing with a friend adds two more Shades, with a cap of four characters on screen.
Officially shown Shade techniques include:
- Bridges, lasso two Shades together to form a walkable, bounceable rope bridge
- Anchors, park a Shade up high, then pull yourself up or swing from it
- Glide extensions, drop a mid-air Shade that keeps gliding, then latch on to it
- Checkpoints, after a fall, switch to a Shade you left behind instead of restarting
- Item handling, hang an ingredient from one Shade's lasso and grab it from another angle
- Catapults, place a Shade in a scoop, pull the rope, switch, ride
Playing together online
Online co-op supports up to four mice. On PC, Hela uses Epic Online Services for accounts and matchmaking, the free layer can be linked to your Steam account, and you don't need the Epic Games Store launcher when playing on Steam. Cross-platform play between PC and consoles has not been confirmed yet.
Remote play & family features
On Steam, Hela supports Remote Play Together (share your copy for online split-screen), Steam Cloud saves, Family Sharing and Remote Play on TV, handy for the two-player couch setup.
